Industrial Communications Protocol

The Brief

The client had an existing successful range of individual products, but was developing new ideas that required these products to communicate with each other, as well as third-party systems. Unique requirements and circumstances precluded the use of any existing industry-standard communication protocol. Databerry Systems was engaged to develop a specialised communications protocol that could unify these disparate devices.

The Deliverable

  • A customised communications protocol was designed with the following features:

    • Flexibility to meet a number of different messaging requirements, and to also be adaptable over time with changing requirements.

    • Efficiency to meet the real-time operational requirements.

    • Media independence.

    • Ability to be overlayed on top of many existing industry-standard communications media and protocols.

    • Ability to be implemented in many different hardware environments and software languages.

  • A number of different implementations using different software languages and tool-chains.

  • A set of simulators that implemented the protocol to facilitate the development of new products that use it.

  • Libraries and supporting documentation allowing in-house and customer software developers to incorporate the protocol into their products.

The Outcome

This specialised protocol was successfully deployed and has, for many years now, served as the backbone for the organisation’s integrated product offering. The solution has proved to be flexible and scalable to new product applications, and continues to deliver a competitive advantage, allowing the client to differentiate themselves and grow their business.
